A great introductory into early Heidegger.

This is a great introductory into early Heidegger. Mulhall does an excellent job explaining Being and Time without oversimplifying it.

An unconventional approach

The analysis of §34 on Discourse is difficult to undrstand. For example on page 93 :
"Heidegger's distinction between assertion and discourse might thus be understood as a distinction between a type of speech act and the CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK upon which that speech act (along with every other speech act) must draw; and the latter can plausibly be thought of as the Articulation of the intelligibility of things"..."At this level, linguistic meaning and the meaning of entities are one and the same thing : the former discloses the latter and thereby articulates the basis of Dasein's capacity to disclose entities to their Being."
It seems to me that basic level of understanding cannot be "linguistic" because Heidegger wrote in §32 (German page 149) : "Any prepredicative seeing of what is at hand is already in itself understanding and interpretative. " So how could prepredicative seeing be "linguistic"? And still this prepredicative seeing of a hammer that is too heavy, is at the level of interpretation. Below interpretation is simple understanding, that, according to Dreyfus, Polt, and so many others is non-conceptual in the phenomenon of fluid regular action.
This is a crucial point of Being and time. And the fact that outstanding philosophers can diverge so much on a crucial point simply shows, perhaps, that Heidegger's writing can be read in very different ways?
