About the Author

Bassam Tibi is a Professor Emeritus of International Relations. Between 1973 and 2009 he taught at the University of Goettingen, and he was A.D. White Professor at Large at Cornell University until 2010. Between 1982 and 2000 Professor Tibi was parallel to Goettingen at Harvard University in a variety of affiliations, the latest of which is the Bosch Fellow of Harvard. His work has been translated into 16 languages, and he has published a great number of books including Islam’s Predicament with Modernity (Routledge, 2009) and Islam, World Politics and Europe (Routledge, 2008). The president of Germany Roman Herzog decorated him in 1995 with the highest Medal/State Decoration for his "bridging between Islam and the West".

The collection highlights the diversity of representations of Muslims and the range of approaches to questions of Muslim religious and cultural identity, as well as secular discourse. Essays by leading scholars in the field highlight the significant role that literature, film, and other cultural products such as music can play in opening up space for complex reflections on Muslim identities and cultures, and how such imaginative cultural forms can enable us to rethink secularism and religion.

About the Author

Claire Chambers is Lecturer in Global Literature at the University of York, UK. She researches modern literature from South Asia, the Arab world and their diasporas. Claire is the author of British Muslim Fictions: Interviews with Contemporary Writers and the forthcoming Representations of Muslims in Britain.

Caroline Herbert is Senior Lecturer in Postcolonial Literatures at Leeds Metropolitan University, UK. Her research centres on contemporary South Asian Literature and film, with a specific interest in narratives of urban modernity, secularism, and economic liberalization in India. She is editor of Postcolonial Cities: South Asia, a special issue of Moving Worlds (2013).

Thomas G. Mahnken is currently Jerome E. Levy Chair of Economic Geography and National Security at the US Naval War College. He is also a Visiting Scholar at the Philip Merrill Center for Strategic Studies at The Johns Hopkins University’s Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). He is the author of Uncovering Ways of War: U.S. Intelligence and Foreign Military Innovation, 1918-1941 (2002), (with James R. FitzSimonds) The Limits of Transformation: Officer Attitudes toward the Revolution in Military Affairs (2003), Technology and the American Way of War Since 1945 (2008), and Uncovering Ways of War: U.S. Intelligence and Foreign Military Innovation, 1918-1941 (2012). He is editor (with Emily O. Goldman) of The Information Revolution in Military Affairs in Asia (2004) and (with Richard K. Betts) Paradoxes of Strategic Intelligence: Essays in Honor of Michael I. Handel (Frank Cass, 2003). Joseph A. Maiolo is Professor of International History in the Department of War Studies, King’s College London, UK. Victoria Henshaw is a Lecturer in Urban Design and Planning at the University of Sheffield. She writes the blog Smell and the City.
