About the Author

James Thomas, Professor of Theatre and Head of the PhD for Scholar-Directors at Wayne State University is a graduate of St. Ambrose College (BA), Villanova University (MA), and the University of Texas at Austin (PhD). Thomas has also taught theatre at Mount Holyoke College, Marquette University and Florida State University, where he was Associate Dean of the School of Theatre. His recent directing credits include Six Characters in Search of an Author and Cymbeline at Detroit's Hilberry Theatre, and Ah, Wilderness! and The Skin of our Teeth at the Bonstelle Theatre. His research has been published in Theatre Journal, Theatre Topics, and Contemporary Theatre Review. He is also translator of the books of Russian director Anatoly Efros and Director of Wayne State University’s Study Abroad Program with the Moscow Art Theatre School. He is currently at work on a directing textbook.

A great tool for reading a play like an artist

Full Disclosure: I have studied with the author for the last four and a half years.
That said, I have a pretty thorough experience of working with this book as a student and as a teacher, and I have found it extremely useful. Thomas's careful, systematic approach provides numerous opportunities for discovery at different levels within the text of the script. And he does all of this with a focus on performance - how do you locate and communicate insights that will unlock the script for production? What is particularly useful for the actor, the director, the designer? The approach is highly detailed and highly applicable. I have seen the book work immensely well for classes of first year undergrads, and advanced graduate classes alike. This is a phenomenal tool in teaching students to look at a text like artists, not like English students.

Anna Amelina is a Senior Researcher in the Faculty of Sociology at Bielefeld University, Germany. Her research focuses on social inequality and migration, transnationalization of gender regimes and methodology of cross-border studies.

Thomas Faist is Professor of Transnational, Development and Migration Studies in the Faculty of Sociology at Bielefeld University, Germany. His main fields of interest are transnational studies, international migration, social policy and citizenship.

Self-sight depends on opening oneself up to others

I thoroughly enjoyed Dunning's book. He argues that most of us lack insight into our own strengths & weaknesses because the internal forces promoting overconfidence overwhelm any potentially negative feedback from our environment. Using an ingenious set of experiments designed with collaborators, plus evidence from the work of others, Dunning reviews what we know about the psychological factors impeding self-assessment. First, if we are unable to competently produce something, we are unlikely to be good judges of what we have produced. Thus, incompetent people remain blissfully ignorant of their incompetence. Second, we judge ourselves based on our ability to come up with 'reasons' for our judgments, as well as the speed with which we reach judgments. Third, when feedback is available, it often fails to inform our judgment because it arrives irregularly, provokes ambiguous interpretations, is biased toward positive reports, and so forth. Humans rely on some simple heuristics that promote superstituous learning and reinforce their positive images of themselves. Fourth, we assume we are unique and thus even though we are often fairly accurate at predicting the behavior of others, we view ourselves as superior to the 'average' person.

Dunning makes these points and many more with a sly wit and often tongue-in-check observations that kept me interested even when he told me more than I wanted to know about some of the experiments. I winced occasionally when I recognized some of my own self-serving behaviors that block accurate self-assessments.

His last chapter, "reflections on self-reflection," draws his themes to a sensible conclusion and addresses the policy implications of his work. Is self-judgment always inaccurate? Is it really bad to hold erroneous self-assessments? Under what conditions is over-optimism dangerous? He ends with some suggestions to those of us brave enough to seek greater self-awareness, in spite of what we'll learn.

Insight indeed

Seconding the reviews already posted, this book is an absolute affirmation of years of anecdotal evidence. The research is good, but the conclusions are absolutely stunning. Anyone reading this will swear it is a biography of some boss he or she has had, or perhaps a coworker. The incompetent person reading this will be unwilling to introspectively determine that he or she is the incompetent [...] that everyone suffers, so the book's one drawback is that the target audience has a segment that will be utterly oblivious to its implications. I wish this were required reading in every university administration, where this kind of self-deluding incompetence runs wild and breeds like rabbits--very sycophantic and myopic rabbits at that.

About the Author

Philip Kretsedemas is an Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Massachusetts-Boston. His research and writing has examined the dynamics of immigrant racialization, policy outcomes for immigrant populations and the regulation of migrant flows by the state. Some of his journal articles have appeared in American Quarterly, International Migration and Stanford Law and Policy Review. He is also the co-editor of Keeping Out the Other: A Critical Introduction to Immigration Enforcement Today (with David Brotherton; 2008, Columbia University Press) and is the author of The Immigration Crucible: Transforming ‘Race’, Nation and the Limits of the Law (2012, Columbia University Press).

Nobody is better qualified than Professor Paulo Erbisti to have written this book “Design of Hydraulic Gates”, because he has acquired a very broad personal experience during his career devoted to hydroelectric projects, not only with a scientific spirit, but also a practical approach. He knows very well all the phases of implementation of hydromechanical equipment, from feasibility studies through to erection and commissioning, as well as rehabilitation.

This book is extremely welcome as an efficient synthesis of a broad subject, and engineers from the various disciplines, not only mechanical and electrical but also civil engineers, will recognize its value. The author has covered the subject of gates very comprehensively in his book, from history to new developments. He discusses not only the principle of gates and their associated equipment, the choice of type and calculation methods, but also he (as an excellent practical engineer, who knows that ‘the devil hides in the details’) describes their construction details. About the Author
Brazilian engineer Paulo Erbisti graduated in mechanical engineering and has amassed considerable experience working on numerous hydromechanical projects, contributing greatly to hydropower/dam engineering over the last few decades in South America, Africa and Asia. He has worked on many important projects including Itaipu, Belo Monte, Tucurui, Gotvand, Tarbela, Capanda, Guri and Tocoma. Erbisti is a visiting professor on the topic of hydraulic gate design for the post-graduate course of hydraulic engineering at the University of Paraná, Brazil. He is a member of the consulting board of the International Journal on Hydropower and Dams, UK. In 2011, he was elected by International Water Power & Dam Construction magazine as one of twenty people believed to have made the biggest difference to the sector over the last decade.

Having previously owned an earlier edition in the author's (and mine) main language, and being familiar with his work, I must say this is a very useful and well written book.
There is ample material and the reading is easy. Also, the print had no issues and was of good quality.
Very recommended.
