A form of 'electronic opium' is how some people have characterised young people’s internet use in China. The problem of 'internet addiction' (wangyin) is seen by some parents as so severe that they have sought psychiatric help for their children. This book, which is based on extensive original research, including discussions with psychiatrists, parents and 'internet-addicted' young people, explores the conflicting attitudes which this issue reveals. It contrasts the views of young people who see internet use, especially gaming, as a welcome escape from the dehumanising pressures of contemporary Chinese life, with the approach of those such as their parents, who medicalise internet overuse and insist that working hard for good school grades is the correct way to progress. The author shows that these contrasting attitudes lead to battles which are often fierce and violent, and argues that the greater problem may in fact lie with parents and other authority figures, who misguidedly apply high pressure to enforce young people to conform to the empty values of a modern, dehumanised consumer-oriented society.

'The idea of Internet addiction haunts parents, teachers, and other adults, as well as the youth who feel overwhelmed by the appeal of the virtual world. Many refer to psychological instability, worsening grades at school, distancing of self from friends and family, and other signs as evidence of such addiction. ... The author recognizes that some Chinese youth indeed demonstrate problematic behavioral patterns that make it difficult to lead what is considered to be a "normal" life. In order to deal with these concerns, Bax suggests that a new approach of "[seeking] to uncover the intra-, inter- and extra-personal factors underlining socially problematic Internet use" is necessary. Not a great textbook by any means...

A lot of integrated lit reviews culminating to make this edition...not a good thing in this instance. So many references cited within a paragraph in the text that the parentheticals become too distracting to understand the concept being written about even for this current PhD student. Further, the political analysis and atmosphere chapters are rudimentary at best without any real definitive concepts, only basic overviews barely scratching the surface of the political arena surrounding education in the US.

A fine book, with one caveat

John Nathan Anderson has written a valuable investigation of radio's utterly botched move to a new technical standard, called "HD," though it doesn't mean "high definition." Anderson spent a lot of time with source documents - filings with the government, articles in the two main radio journals during the period in question. He's deeply knowledgeable and writes the story well.

The caveat: you won't know any of this if you download the sample chapter for Kindle. For some reason, the first chapter of the book is written in a dense, hard-to-follow academic style that doesn't do justice to the book that follows. You get a much better flavor of Anderson the writer by reading his web site/blog, diymedia.net.

Anyway, worth the effort if you care about radio or about the way business gets done in this country these days.

Grounded in philosophy, this text calls nurse back to our roots: meeting the health care needs of in the community, unfettered by bureaucratic minutiae. Facilitating Humanization: Liberating the Profession of Nursing From Institutional Confinement on Behalf of Social Justice by Danny Willis and colleagues form Boston College was most compelling for me. Willis et all call nurses to liberate themselves from the conventional view that nursing is practiced primarily within medical institutions and therefore subject to regulations and constraints defined by others.. Historically, vulnerable populations and social injustices were identified by nurses An obligation remains to investigate and address the causes of poor health and social conditions, liberated from institutional confinement. The Responsibility to Protect (R2P) doctrine has been heralded as the new international security norm to ensure the protection of peoples against genocide, ethnic cleansing, war crimes and crimes against humanity. Yet, for all of the discussion, endorsements and reaffirmations of this new norm, R2P continues to come under fire for its failures, particularly, and most recently, in the case of Syria.

This book argues that a duty to protect is best considered a Kantian provisional duty of justice. The international system ought to be considered a state of nature, where legal institutions are either weak or absent, and so duties of justice in such a condition cannot be considered peremptory. This book suggests that by understanding the duty’s provisional status, we understand the necessity of creating the requisite executive, legislative and judicial authorities. Furthermore, the book provides three innovative contributions to the literature, study and practice of R2P and Kantian political theory: it provides detailed theoretical analysis of R2P; it addresses the research gap that exists with Kant’s account of justice in states of nature; and it presents a more comprehensive understanding of the metaphysics of justice as well as R2P.

This book will be of much interest to students of the Responsibility to Protect, humanitarian intervention, global ethics, international law, security studies and international relations (IR) in general.

The author investigates the extent to which transitional justice institutions have provided justice for torture victims; illustrating how truth commissions and international courts operate together and reflecting on their successes and weaknesses with reference to wider social, political and economic conditions. Stanley also details victims’ experiences of torture and highlights how they experience life in the newly built state of Timor-Leste

Through interviews with a range of Japanese women, this book explores how women’s gender roles are both reified and undermined in Japan today, and uncovers the prevalent themes, or ‘discourses’, that are utilized to construct gendered identities. It shows that while dominant discourses formulate notions of femininity within the domestic sphere, these are simultaneously resisted and problematized by contemporary women. To this end, Justin Charlebois traces the construction of different ‘oppositional’ femininities, such as the single career woman and married working mother, which challenge, destabilize, and potentially reconfigure the traditional gender order.

This book makes an important contribution to our understanding of gender roles and femininity in Japan, and as such will be of great interest to students and scholars of Japanese culture and society, gender studies and women's studies.
