Surprisingly the Right Book

I was so surprised to find this book for such an inexpensive price. From the original publishing company, it is impossible to find it for under $100, so when I told my professor I had found it for an extremely low price, she didn't believe I had found the right book. She thought it was the workbook or something. Lo and behold when it came it was the exact book I needed, just by a different publisher. Sure, it has a different cover, but the content and pagination are the same, so I am having no problems in class. As a poor college student, I would recommend buying this version. You get the same book for less money leaving both you and your bank account happy.

Scholarly, in-depth survey of the history of the English language

This book reviews the history and evolution of the English language from ancient times to the present. The authors do so in a methodical, scholarly manner that provides a thorough, in-depth look at how the English language (a member of the Indo-European family of languages) developed and changed over time in the context of social, religious, political and military, and economic events in English history.

At the end of each chapter is an extensive bibliography that will provide interested readers with numerous leads to additional and supplemental reading materials. The book is scholarly and academic, and not suitable for readers with only a casual interest in the history of the English language. Anyone studying the history of the English language for the first time should consider looking at more basic, introductory publications before trying this book.

Apart from readers with a scholarly interest in historical linguistics, this book could be of interest as a reference book for teachers and instructors of English as a Second Language (ESL). Although this book does not provide material that could be readily used in an ESL class, its discussion of how the English language developed and changed over time could help ESL teachers and instructors better understand some of historical reasons behind various aspects of the English language that often are difficult to explain to English language learners. A less technical book on history of the English language that is specifically addressed to ESL teachers and instructors is Norbert Schmitt and Richard Marsden, Why Is English Like That?: Historical Answers to Hard ELT Questions (Michigan Teacher Training).

Needed this book for my history and structure of the English language class. It is a bit dry at times, but for the most part the book is a good read and it is interesting to learn about how much our language has changed through the years.

Before Twitter, the Internet and Texting, There was Gertrude Stein!

What makes for a celebrity, especially in the days before all of our computer and telephone based technologies when newspapers, magazines and radio were the ways of spreading the word of the not so rich, but often famous?

Karen Lieck addresses this in her fascinating study of what made Gertrude Stein such a well-known, public figure even though very few had read her works except for a couple of poems here and there in the popular magazines of the day.And professor Lieck does so in a very readable, non-scholarly, jargon-filled way---thank God! (It was not until 1933 that Stein had her first bestseller, THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF ALICE B. TOKLAS, which came out almost 25 years after her first book was published.)

The book is an amazing compilation of information drawn from hundreds of diverse sources, some quite obscure, which provides incredible insights into the cultural and popular history of the US from the early 20th century through the late 1930s.

My only two complaints---there are many, many typos in the text, quite unfortunate for a work of such careful scholarly research (hopefully these can be corrected in future editions) and the book's price which will keep many from buying it. Maybe a local public or academic library will shell out the $103 cover price for those who won't or can't fork out such big bucks. (Even the amazon.com price is still high for such a short book.)

Well worth a read for anyone who even has the slightest interest in Gertrude Stein.

A masterful compilation of research

this book sets us straight about Gertrude Stein's contemporary popularity and the literary bent of journalism at the turn of the century. Readers will be astonished by the American reception of Stein's work from the 1910s to the 1930s, which Karen Leick has documented in laborious detail. While other scholars have assumed that the author's work was unknown in mainstream America until the publication of the _Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas_ in 1933, Leick shows that Stein was published in a variety of magazines and anthologies that were reviewed and quoted by columnists who followed the developments of Modernism with close attention.
