Ellen E. Jones holds USA Local 829 credentials as a lighting designer, scenic designer, and scenic artist. She has held numerous academic posts as well as working for theatrical vendors. Her twenty-plus year career in the industry has included designing and painting scores of productions for various theatre companies and shops in the US. She particularly enjoys working with students as emerging artists and joined the faculty of the Department of Theatre and Dance at Youngstown State University in the fall of 2013, where she serves as the scenic and lighting designer.

Producing Theatre Sustainably from A to Z

In my 40 years of professional theatre activity, I've never read a more meaningful or comprehensive guide to producing theatre sensibly and responsibly. As a funder, I've watched theatres fail because of excessive waste. As an actor, I've been forced to provide my own props and costumes when companies I worked for failed to make practical design choices. And as an academic, I've watched productions over-reach technically when simplicity would have heightened the artistic results. This gem of a book by Ellen Jones--a very experienced and savvy professional--should be on the shelf of every producer. It is a bible for producing high-quality theatre with 21st century strategies.

Abandoning the stereotyped image of Keynes in his early years, so often described as a young connoisseur interested in philosophy and with little inclination for politics, this book sees his perfect fusion of political vision and economic competence in the era of ‘New Liberalism’ as the true wellspring of Keynesianism.

Judith Carrier is a Senior Lecturer and Co-Director of Postgraduate Taught Studies at the School of Healthcare Sciences, Cardiff University, UK. Her research and teaching interests are in evidence synthesis, evidence utilisation, primary care nursing and the management of long-term conditions, particularly diabetes. She is an active member and Director of the Wales Centre for Evidence-Based Care, a collaborating centre of the Joanna Briggs Institute, Adelaide, Australia.

About the Author

Bettina Bläsing is a research scientist at the Neurocognition and Action Research Group at Bielefeld University, responsible investigator at the Center of Excellence Cognitive Interaction Technology (CITEC), and member of the Research Institute for Cognition and Robotics (CoR-Lab). Her main research interests are the control and learning of complex movements, mental representations of the body, movement, actions and skills and neurocognitive aspects and expertise in dance.

Martin Puttke was formerly a dancer, headmaster and artistic director of the State Ballet School Berlin. He was also the ballet director of the State Opera Ballet Company Berlin and of the Aalto Ballett Theater Essen. He is a renowned ballet pedagogue. In 1988 he became a Professor at the Hochschule für Schauspielkunst "Ernst Busch" Berlin. His main interest is the renewal of the school of classical dance by his new system DANAMOS.

Thomas Schack is Professor and head of the Neurocognition and Action Research Group at Bielefeld University. He is principal investigator at the Center of Excellence Cognitive Interaction Technology (CITEC) and member of the Research Institute for Cognition and Robotics (CoR-Lab). His main research interests concern mental movement representation, mental training, cognitive robotics and the neurocognitive basis of complex movement.

.History Built in 1939 as the residence for Otani Kozui, the 22nd Abbot of the Nishi Hongagji, a Japanese sub-sect of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism, Siaoyaoyuan contains architectural aesthetic features typical to the Japanese colonial period. The juxtaposition of Japanese and western styles and elements bears certain significance in the architectural history, and profound potential for further building reuse, while the building itself serves as a testimony to the humanitarian and cross-era evolution, hence its cultural and historical value.
Otani Kozui was famous with a high ranking status in religion and for expeditions. He was also related to the royal family by the marriage of his sister to the Emperor, and involved at a senior level in decision making in Taiwan’s then Japanese-ruled parliament, between 1940 and 1948. In 1940, the construction of Siaoyaoyuan was completed, with its purpose of use outlined as below:
1. To serve as Otani Kozui’s training base for Taiwan’s agricultural development and education of his disciples,
2. To serve as Otani Kozui’s summer residence and writing studio during his governmental dispatch to Taiwan,
3. To serve as Nishi Hongagji’s auxiliary office in southern Taiwan,
4. To turn Kaohsiung into Taiwan’s critical gateway to the south-east Asia.
I. The Exterior:
With a pronounced emphasis on its living functionalities, the building follows the spatial construction logic of Japanese-style wooden structure, its line of movement tracing the exposed-externally reinforced concrete staircase, with an interior staircase leading into the public area.
Terraces were built to fill up small crammed space wherever necessary, for instance, on the east side of the building. The wood-paved terraces are of exquisite aesthetics in design and serve such architectural purpose as connecting all living spaces. The tiles for the roof are refined black tiles from the Hosing Kiln.
II. The Interior:
1. The building contains the characteristics of traditional Japanese residence, with no visually centric space such as a built-in courtyard,
2. The entire space was divided into three major compartments: social area for guest entertainment, service area and a lounge area (which is the part of Siaoyaoyuan recorded as the historical building today). The lounge connects with exterior space by a side corridor-cum-foyer.
3. Because of Otani Kozui’s status in the royal family and his experience of overseas studies, the interior decoration and design for both of the lounge area and guest reception exhibits an interesting Western-and-Japanese fusion.
