A missing variable in analyses of these conflicts hitherto has been the nature of the civil-military interface and its impact.

The principal argument of this book is that the civil-military interface should ideally be integrated within the interagency arena as well as within the defence ministry. Such integration has the potential to provide joint civil-military planning and comprehensive approaches to operations. It also creates mutual trust and understanding amongst officers and civil servants from different departments, agencies and units, and thereby, a co-operative interagency culture. For the civil-military interface to function effectively within the chain of command during operations, a co-operative culture of trust is essential. Crucially, structurally and culturally integrated civil-military structures are likely to provide a more balanced view of the functional imperative of the armed forces. The results are armed forces fit for whatever purpose the political leadership decides for them - including complex peace support operations. Empirically, the book applies the theoretical framework to a comparative study of US and British patterns of civil-military relations, their strategic cultures and their operations in Iraq.

This book will be of much interest to students of peace operations, civil-military relations, humanitarian intervention, and security studies/IR in general.

Robert Egnell is a lecturer in War Studies at the Swedish National Defence College and a senior researcher at the Swedish Defence Research Agency. He was awarded the 2008 Kenneth N. Waltz Dissertation Prize for the best thesis in the field of international security.

This is an excellent collection of essays by Bollas, providing a comprehensive sampling of the exceptionally wide range of topics addressed by this psychoanalytic writer/practitioner. Some of the topics are a bit technical and of interest mainly to therapists and practitioners of psychoanalytic orientation. Others deal with important topics of general interest having to do with the collective consciousness of human society such as the fascist mindset, the structure of evil, and a particularly thought-provoking essay on a new personality disorder of our times (the "normotic personality") Bollas sees as emerging in a society increasingly caught up in technologically empowered consumerism.

Drawing on interview research conducted with a variety of stakeholders in four donor countries (Denmark, France, Switzerland and the United States) and an extensive review of primary and secondary sources on aid politics in the countries studied, the book offers both a static overview of the characteristics of aid policymaking systems and a historical treatment of policymaking dynamics over a 25-year period (1980-2005).

Applying a common theoretical framework to the four case studies and using development NGO advocacy as a starting point for examining the politics of aid, this book provides a synthesis of several strands of theoretical work dealing with interest group politics and political institutions to inform the analysis of the societal and governmental determinants of aid choices.

They cannot solve much simpler social problems and prevent recessions and depressions, eradicate hunger or poverty, guarantee employment or affordable health care, or ensure peace and security. Using theories of complex adaptive systems developed from the natural sciences, this book explains why sustainable development - increasing human enjoyment while conserving the environment - cannot be created by governments from the top-down. Sustainability is not just another policy problem; it is a matter of changing the social paradigm from the bottom up.

Our psychological needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness are laid waste by 'getting and spending' in a competitive society. And an enjoyable life needs less consumption.

Two questions remain. First, how might it be possible to teach people how to find true enjoyment in the pursuit of well-being? This book shows how this might emerge with a social marketing campaign that uses progressive commitments within small social groups to enforce positive deviances from normal patterns of consumption. We can begin to learn how to manage our lives for enjoyment rather than accumulation by gaining financial management skills, avoiding most debts, and knowing the difference between needs - that we must have - and the unnecessary wants that marketers try to make us indulge.

If these lessons were well learned and people consumed much less as they enjoyed their lives in the pursuit of well-being, what would become of modern capitalism that thrives on constant economic growth driven by consumerism? Would it collapse into a permanent depression of falling demand and deflation? Because society is a complex system, no prediction is reliable and chaotic changes may always intrude. However, this book argues that if business and government react intelligently to the public's changing demands, capitalism may be sustained but in a modified form. Capitalism could continue and sustain development if most of us pursued our personal well-being.

About the Author

Bujang B.K. Huat graduated from the Polytechnic of Central London, UK in 1983, and obtained his MSc and PhD at the Imperial College London and the Victoria University Manchester, UK in 1986 and 1991 respectively. He has spent his professional career as a Professor in Geotechnical Engineering, at the Department of Civil Engineering, Universiti Putra Malaysia, one of Malaysia’s five research universities. Currently he serves as the Dean of School of Graduate Studies of the same university. His special area of interest is in the field of geotechnical and geological engineering, especially peat, and slope engineering; he has authored and co-authored 18 books, edited ten conference proceedings, and published more than 100 journal and conference proceedings papers in the field of soil mechanics and foundation engineering.

Arun Prasad is Associate Professor of Geotechnical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology (Banaras Hindu University), India. He graduated with a BSc in Civil Engineering in 1986 from Utkal University, India; he obtained his MSc and PhD from Sambalpur University and Devi Ahilya University, India in 1989 and 2000 respectively. He worked as Post-Doctoral Researcher at Universiti Putra Malaysia during 2009–10. His special area of research is the soil stabilization of soft and contaminated soils. He has co-authored three books and co-edited a book in the field of Geotechnical Engineering, and has published more than 60 papers in journals and conference proceedings.

Dr. Afshin Asadi received his BSc in Civil Engineering from IAU, his MSc in Civil Engineering-Environmental Engineering from the Iran University of Science and Technology, and his PhD in Geotechnical Engineering from University Putra Malaysia in 2010. He received an Australia Endeavour Research Fellowship Award in 2011 and completed his postdoctoral studies at the University of Wollongong in 2012. His research areas are mostly ground improvement, electrokinetics, and environmental geotechnics. He is a member of the Environmental Geotechnics editorial board published by ICE Publishing, UK. Presently, he is a Research Fellow at the Housing Research Centre (HRC), University Putra Malaysia.

Sina Kazemian is Assistant Professor at the Civil Engineering department of Payame Noor University (PNUM), I.R. of Iran He obtained his PhD (with distinction) in Geotechnical and Geological Engineering from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and achieved recognition of excellence during his PhD viva; his name was inscribed in the “Hall of Fame’’ at UPM. He has worked as a lecturer/researcher at Azad University of Bojnourd, Iran and also has more than 10 years of working experience in the industry as Senior Geotechnical Engineer at Sepehr Andishan Sanabad (SAS) Co., Iran and Structure Civil Geotechnics (SCG) Co., Malaysia. Currently, he is also the Principal Geotechnical Engineer and technical associate of Kavosh Pay Co. in Iran. To date he has published more than 100
papers in reputed journals and conference proceedings.

As a result of this crisis, the need for effective social policies and social security programs were recognized. The idea that economic growth would solve the problem of poverty was increasingly challenged. Even in China today, where rapid growth has created new employment opportunities and the promise of prosperity for many, the government has recognized that the problem of poverty cannot be addressed only through economic growth but that comprehensive social policies must be formulated, and this includes the development of an effective security system.

About the Author

Kelly LeRoux is an Associate Professor in the Department of Public Administration at the University of Illinois at Chicago, where she teaches courses in nonprofit management. Before beginning an academic career, she worked for eleven years as an administrator for a nonprofit behavioural health and housing organization, and has served on numerous nonprofit boards. Her research has been published in more than a dozen public and nonprofit management journals and has been sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts, Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University, Kresge Foundation, the Institute for Policy and Civic Engagement, the Institute for Research on Race and Public Policy, and the Great Cities Institute.

Mary K. Feeney is an Associate Professor at the School of Public Affairs at Arizona State University and is the Lincoln Professor of Ethics in Public Affairs. She also serves as the Associate Director for the Center for Science Technology and Environmental Policy Studies at ASU. Her research focuses on public and nonprofit management and science and technology policy. Feeney has published over 30 peer-reviewed articles in public management, science and technology policy, and higher education research and co-authored the book Red Tape Research: A Prism for Public Administration Theory with Barry Bozeman.

Exceptional but error-ridden content

I share everyone's enthusiasm for this book: it's one of the most clearly-written, user-friendly guide for adults to learn Hebrew that I've yet found. I've spent many evenings and four weekends completing this book, and it's helped bring back the language fluency that I had as a child.

I've taken off a star, however, because of the inexcusable number of errors in the answer key and in the book. Sometimes, portions of exercises are inexplicably missing entirely from the answer key; in other cases, the answer key includes misspelled or sporadically different words compared to the actual exercise, and vice-versa. The CD recordings also vary words and even omit entire sentences from the in-book dialogs.

The authors also have a frustrating tendency to use words in the book that they do not define in the end-of-book dictionary, so it can be sometimes hard to read along. Plan on including a decent Hebrew dictionary along with this book.

The Disc 1 I received was also defective, however, Routledge promptly promised to replace it when asked.

That said, this remains one of the better books, its flaws aside. But it was inexcusable for the publishers to release it without a competent editorial job. "Modern Hebrew for Beginners" is probably your better bet.

Extremely helpful...

I started with 'Living Israeli Hebrew For the Very Beginner' and it proved an invaluable foundation for both speaking and reading...you do have to know your aleph-bet visually and aurally. I have done 'Pimsleur I' and it was a great start on pronunciation and conversational style. 'Hebrew in 10 Minutes a Day' is modestly helpful, mainly for the stickers... and now I have a live personal tutor whose idea of rapid immersion makes me empathize with the Salem witches... but the one thing that has allowed me to start weaving all this together, and actually make sense of the spoken and written language, is this book. (I did not get the tapes or CD, but plan to add them if I can.) Thank heavens for the excellent transliterations!

My reasons for 4 instead of 5 stars are that I would have liked a little more complete verb table, and definitely would like a larger vocab dictionary and a better index. In short, looking stuff up is tough and slow, but there's a lot here, and generally very well-explained.

I'm very impressed.

I've just received the book, tape and CD combination, and I'm very impressed. Like another reviewer, I am frustrated that after several years of attempting to learn the language, I'm not at the level of facility as I have been after only one or two years of other languages.
The dialogs are spoken by natives, so it helps your pronunciation.
The book and CDs complement one another, but don't totally duplicate the information the other. For example, the book has written exercises and cultural notes, while the CD has an instructor, suggestions about how to use the system, comments and explanations about the dialogue, and role play exercises with prompts.
I really like the fact that the book doesn't assume I'm a college student, and isn't full of vocabulary about dorms, classrooms and libararies, which I'm very unlikely to use, but could pick up if I knew the language.
I highly recommend the edition I bought, which includes CDs and tapes. The CD tracks are portions of each unit, so you can review in smaller chunks. The tapes can be used in special foreign language learning tape players that replay even smaller sections repeatedly.
One note, It's an English book and CD series. The instructor has a standard (BBC) English accent. Some Americans have problems understanding this accent. I was raised bi-culturally, so I don't have this problem. I also think that's likely to be a problem older Americans might have, and younger ones don't.

Elizabeth Macdonald is Associate Professor of Urban Design in the Departments of City and Regional Planning and Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning in the University of California at Berkeley’s College of Environmental Design. She is a licensed architect and a principal in the San Francisco-based firm Jacobs Macdonald: Cityworks.

The kindle version does not have page numbers just locations which makes it difficult for citations and references.

A Great Collection of Essays in Urban Design

This is a must have book for those who love urban design. It consists of classic, fundamental and forward thinking essays on urban design.
