The Muslim Brotherhood is one of the most influential Islamist organisations today. Based in Egypt, its network includes branches in many countries of the Near and Middle East. Although the organisation has been linked to political violence in the past, it now proposes a politically moderate ideology.

The book provides an in-depth analysis of the Muslim Brotherhood during the years of al-Hudaybi’s leadership, and how he sought to steer the organization away from the radical wing, inspired by Sayyid Qutb, into the more moderate Islamist organization it is today. It is his legacy which eventually fostered the development of non-violent political ideas.

During the years of persecution, 1954 to 1971, radical and moderate Islamist ideas emerged within the Brotherhood’s midst. Inspired by Sayyid Qutb’s ideas, a radical wing evolved which subsequently fed into radical Islamist networks as we know them today. Yet, it was during the same period that al-Hudaybi and his followers proposed a moderate political interpretation, which was adopted by the Brotherhood and which forms its ideological basis today.

This book contributes to a feminist understanding of international human rights by examining restrictions on reproductive freedom through the lens of the right to be free from torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment. Ronli Sifris challenges the view that torture only takes place within the traditional paradigm of interrogation, punishment or intimidation of a detainee, arguing that this traditional construction of the concept of torture prioritises the experiences of men over the experiences of women given that the pain and suffering from which women disproportionately suffer frequently occurs outside of this context. She does this by conceptualising restrictions on women’s reproductive freedom within the framework of the right to be free from torture.

The book considers the gendered nature of international law and the gender dimensions of the right to be free from torture. It examines the extension of the prohibition of torture to encompass situations beyond the traditional detainee context in recent years to encompass situations such as rape and female genital mutilation. It goes on to explore in detail whether denying access to abortion and involuntary sterilization constitutes torture or other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment under international law. The book looks at whether limitations on reproductive freedom meet the determining criteria of torture which are: severe pain or suffering; being intentionally inflicted; being based on discrimination; linked in some way to a State official; whether they constitute lawful sanctions; and the importance of the concept of powerlessness. In doing so the book also highlights how this right may be applicable to other gender-based abuses including female genital mutilation, and how this right may be universally applied to allow women worldwide the right to reproductive freedom.

Contributions to the knowledge of modeling flow and transport, as well as to the characterization of porous media at field scale are of great relevance. This book addresses several of these issues, treated with a variety of methodologies grouped into four parts:

Why do some modern societies punish their offenders differently to others? Why are some more punitive and others more tolerant in their approach to offending and how can these differences be explained? Based on extensive historical analysis and fieldwork in the penal systems of England, Australia and New Zealand on the one hand and Finland, Norway and Sweden on the other, this book seeks to answer these questions.

The book argues that the penal differences that currently exist between these two clusters of societies emanate from their early nineteenth-century social arrangements, when the Anglophone societies were dominated by exclusionary value systems that contrasted with the more inclusionary values of the Nordic countries. The development of their penal programmes over this two hundred year period, including the much earlier demise of the death penalty in the Nordic countries and significant differences between the respective prison rates and prison conditions of the two clusters, reflects the continuing influence of these values. Indeed, in the early 21st century these differences have become even more pronounced.

John Pratt and Anna Eriksson offer a unique contribution to this topic of growing importance: comparative research in the history and sociology of punishment. This book will be of interest to those studying criminology, sociology, punishment, prison and penal policy, as well as professionals working in prisons or in the area of penal policy across the six societies that feature in the book.

About the Author

John Pratt is Professor of Criminology at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. From 2009-2012 he was also a Royal Society of New Zealand James Cook Research Fellow in Social Science and Fellow of the Straus Institute for Advanced Studies of Law and Justice at New York University 2010-11. He has published extensively in the areas of the history and sociology of punishment and comparative penology. In 2009 he was awarded the prestigious Radzinowicz Prize by the Editorial Board of the British Journal of Criminology.

Anna Eriksson is a Senior Lecturer in Criminology at Monash University, Melbourne, Australia. In 2009 she was awarded the New Scholar Prize by the Australian and New Zealand Society of Criminology for best publication, and in 2012 one of only two Australian Research Councils Awards for early career researchers in criminology, funding a three-year study on comparative punishment between Australia and Sweden.

About the Author

Sally Weintrobe, a practising psychoanalyst, is a Fellow of the Institute of Psychoanalysis in London. A well-crafted, urgent and highly valuable book on a most important set of issues

I've just started reading this book and couldn't put it down for about five hours. It's the best item in a still-nearly-vacant niche that should soon be swelling with more books and films asking how exactly we repeat our failure to change the way we live. An anthology of related yet interdisciplinary essays by diverse hands, Engaging with Climate Change maintains a high level of readability, insight, and moral courage that any reader might find rewarding. Though in some places the language about our peril seems understated, in other places it is as dire as it ought to be. I hope the price of the book comes down so that the audience can increase. This is a fine, important book.

I gave the book five stars for gall, and recommend reading it, in spite of not having read it myself, to those who want to understand the state of Academia in the 21st century

I watched a Youtube video on the book launch and had to see if this book was for real. Is it any wonder that there is so little respect for the field of psychoanalysis? "Climate Change Deniers"?

I suppose this goes to show just how gullible and easily led even educated persons can be.

Just how many CO2 atoms can radiate on the head of a pin.

Incredible.

Michael Neenan is Associate Director of the Centre for Stress Management and Centre for Coaching, Blackheath, and a BABCP accredited cognitive behavioural therapist. He has written and edited over 20 books.

No nonsense, highly useful

The authors have an impeccable style of writing, and I have personally trained with Windy. The book is written in a very crisp, concrete and helpful style, and the content is very helpful to help yourself, or if you are a trainer delivering workshops on these topics. A superb compilation of the specific life skills that are necessary for effective living.

About the Author

John Park

John S.W. Park is Professor and Chair of Asian American Studies and an affiliated faculty member in Sociology at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He completed his doctorate in Jurisprudence and Social Policy at the University of California at Berkeley. From 2011 to the present, he has served as the Associate Director for the UC Center for New Racial Studies. Park writes and teaches on topics in race theory, immigration law and policy, and Anglo-American legal and political theory. His books include Elusive Citizenship: Immigration, Asian Americans, and the Paradox of Civil Rights (NYU Press, 2004), Probationary Americans: Contemporary Immigration Policies and the Shaping of Asian American Communities (Routledge, 2005, with Edward J.W. Park), and Illegal Migrations and the Huckleberry Finn Problem (Temple University Press, 2013).

Shannon Gleeson

Shannon Gleeson is Associate Professor of Latin American and Latino Studies at the University of California, Santa Cruz. She received her Ph.D. in 2008 in Sociology and Demography from the University of California, Berkeley. Her research focuses on the workplace experiences of immigrants, the role of documentation status in stratification, andimmigrant civic engagement. Gleeson’s work has been published in a range of journals including Latino Studies, Law & Social Inquiry, Law & Society Review, International Migration, and The American Journal of Sociology.
