Great for period costume draping!

If you're creating, displaying, fitting, or draping period clothing of any type, this book will help you create a dummy that will actually work for your garments.
If you've ever tried to fit or display a true victorian corset over a hard ACME style dress form, you know that it's a waste of time.
The tricks in this book make it clear and simple how to pad up a child-size dress form to the right dimensions and curves for an adult-size period form, how to make arms for a dummy, how to alter existing forms for different shoulder slopes, bust positions, and how to make many many types of crinolines and hoopskirts.
If you're a stage costumer, there are lots of tips and tricks in here to making things look correct without the time and materials layout of full under-structuring. If you require that all of the structuring and supports be period accurate, this book will be less valuable -- but there are many other books that focus specifically on period-authentic detailing. This book is more general, but no less detailed.

Recommended for anyone into period fashion/costuming/re-enacting

Bought this sort of on a whim after eyeing it for a while.. and it has surpassed my expectations. It's very thorough, longer than you'd expect, layout is clear and concise with good photos and diagrams. No squinting at things or omitting the back view, etc. The instructions cover numerous scenarios, and even making toiles/muslin versions of the period garment for various purposes through very basic yet ingenious methods with pictures to illustrate. Just terrific.
I love/research/re-enact period costume and bought this book to round out my costume library, but was so pleasantly surprised by the info in here that I may try some of it myself and will definitely incorporate techniques into my general costuming/research. There are a few basic pattern diagrams for underpinnings and such provided, and a section on different body shapes per fashion era with accompanying illustrations on how to pad the display form appropriately to get that look. Kind of like when you see how a magic trick is actually done, and you think, Of course!
