About the Author
William G. Hoy, DMin, FT, has studied funeral rites for three decades, examining how they are used around the world to help mourners make sense of death and to negotiate the radical changes that come about in the aftermath of a loved person’s death. He has worked as a clergyman, pastoral counselor, and scholar in congregation, hospice, bereavement center and university settings. Dr. Hoy holds the Fellow in Thanatology (FT) advanced practice credential from the Association for Death Education and Counseling, and teaches in the Medical Humanities Program in the College of Arts and Sciences at Baylor University in Waco, Texas.

Do Funerals Matter?

A book of breadth and depth: this book answers its title question with an exploration of funeral practices covering the globe. Beyond looking at funerals, the author examines death rituals and provides a review of similarities and differences in practice and belief. Most interesting is Hoy's five core components that are common across cultures and history.
With the backdrop of these five components, or anchors, Hoy helps the reader understand the value of ritual after death and connects these with a clinical perspective on funerals. The final chapter focuses the use of ritual in grief counseling and leverages the lessons learned from Hoy's research into practical guidance for helping those in grief.
As a grief specialist I found the book changed my understanding of the value of funerals. It has caused me to reflect on the memorial services I have attended, to rethink the services of those I have lost, and to consider how I may direct those I love to memorialize me. Do funeral matter? Yes, they do. And so does this book.

Dr. Bill Hoy writes about a difficult subject in an anecdotal way backed by an in-depth knowledge of people who have experienced a death and grief! He adds substantial basic and clinical research to show the value of a funeral and its healing power. Dr. Hoy discusses the traditions of many faith groups as well as offering practical information like: should the body be at the funeral?
As a chaplain, I am frequently called to the hospital at the time of a death. Often, loved ones have been sitting at the bedside a long time and are tired and devastated. They need to be able to leave, take care of themselves, and know they will gather again and celebrate the life of their loved one. Nowadays, I have to ask, "Will you have a funeral?"
You already know that funerals matter. It is still worth reading this book written about the anchors which link our lives in death and life.

We need to learn to listen to one another, even though we may not view the matter the same.
